It’s actually not ‘The Darkest Before Dawn’

Sarah's Thoughts

Don’t worry, this isn’t a boring ‘science-y’ post.

We’ve always heard the phrase ‘it’s always the darkest before the dawn’. Rather, I’ve heard it in my neck of the woods quite a bit. It wasn’t until recently that I learned any different, too. Actually, the darkest part of the night is somewhere between midnight and one o’clock in the morning. It makes sense, because that is when your location on Earth is facing directly away from the sun. What’s the significance of this anyways?

Next time you face a difficult challenge, remember this. Your struggles won’t get easier or better right away. There’s usually a lengthy period of time where your situation is stagnant. Life isn’t going to be a reflection of the books you read, or the television you watch. When something horrible happens to the protagonist, it seems that almost instantly, something positive enters their lives to counteract the awful. That’s not how things usually work, but wouldn’t books and movies be boring if you had to endure the boring months in between the hurt and the joy? Today we’re rewarded with instant gratification so much, that we often forget what it’s like to have to wait, fret, and pray about our challenges. Don’t give up because the road is difficult and long. There is a waiting period, like that between the darkest and the dawn.

Keep on going, because you’re now another day closer to your dawn.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

A special thank you to the friend who recently reached out to me when I was quietly struggling with my midnight. Thank you for bringing me back to Jesus, and thank you for being such a good friend.
